SUMMER INTERN SPOTLIGHTS
Summers at Culmore Clinic wouldn’t run without our wonderful, hardworking interns. As they return to their respective schools, we wish them the best and thank them publicly with this Summer Intern Spotlight blog! Oh, and in case you were wondering who is writing this blog…fittingly, it’s Maggie Lavoie, one of our interns! Enjoy…
Helen Do
“It has been a very cool and interesting experience. I have not only been able to help others, but the Clinic has helped me learn about their world.”
Helen Do is a rising junior at Lake Braddock high school. As one of our summer interns at Culmore Clinic, Helen is responsible for scanning patient documents into our Electronic Medical Records system and she has been learning how to work the front desk. Outside of The Clinic, Helen loves to sing and play the violin and piano, in addition to running and playing tennis. She says that she loves to learn about new things; she is curious and likes to take initiative to figure things out. Helen’s curiosity and positive attitude has made her a great addition to the Clinic intern crew and we love having her around.
Sloane Daly
“I’m grateful that The Clinic provides me an opportunity to serve Northern Virginia as a whole.”
Summer intern Sloane Daly is a rising junior at Lake Braddock High School. Sloane works side-by-side with fellow summer intern and Lake Braddock classmate, Helen Do. They have been a huge help to Culmore Clinic by scanning patient charts for our electronic medical records system and learning how to work the reception desk. The duo has meticulously organized various donated personal care items so that our patients can create a free “goodie bag” of different sorts of items like shampoos, lotions, toothpastes, feminine hygiene products, etc.
Outside of The Clinic, Sloane enjoys playing cello (she has played for 10 years now!) in addition to playing tennis. She chose to volunteer her time at Culmore Clinic this summer because she felt that in the past during the summertime, she didn’t have much going on and she saw the Clinic as a great way to give back to the community. The Clinic has helped her to understand different ways of life and the world around her, something she said she doesn’t get to experience through her volunteering at Lake Braddock High School. Sloane loves volunteering with Lake Braddock during the year, but that volunteer work serves only the school community. She is grateful that The Clinic provides her an opportunity to serve Northern Virginia as a whole.
Cate Sport

Cate Sport is a rising Junior and pre-med student at the University of Notre Dame, studying Neuroscience and Behavior with a minor in Poverty Studies. In her free time, she enjoys practicing yoga and reading. As another one of our summer interns, Cate has been helping out at the Nursing Station and uploading patient medical records. She decided to volunteer here because she wanted clinical experience in the medical field. Cate noted that she loves how dedicated all of the staff and volunteers are at Culmore Clinic, and she loves being a part of such a great community. We’re thankful to have you as a part of our community, Cate!
Aravindan Balagure
Aravindan Balagure is a rising sophomore at William & Mary, and a pre-med student majoring in Chemistry (he thinks!--he has to decide at the end of this upcoming year). He went to South Lakes for high school, and enjoys playing soccer and piano in his free time. Aravindan has worked at The Clinic for three summers now, making him our veteran summer intern! He can be found helping out with almost everything--the nursing station, front desk, creating Patient ID cards, and any task thrown his way. Aravindan loves working at Culmore Clinic for the medical experience and the opportunity to help the community. We are eternally grateful for all that he has done for The Clinic over these past three summers, and even more grateful for Aravindan’s dedicated and positive spirit that fills the Clinic every Tuesday and Thursday!
Collette Glass

Collette Glass is a rising second-year Nursing student at the University of Virginia where she also rows for the University’s Crew team. A native of Tampa, Florida, Collette is spending the summer in DC with her family and interning with us at The Clinic! She has been observing and assisting with patient check-in, vitals, and other organizational tasks. In her free time, she likes to run and spend time with family and friends. Collette also explained that her experience working at The Clinic has shown her how important it is for low-income individuals to have access to free and low-cost care. Thank you, Collette!
Shea Weingold
Shea Weingold is from Mount Vernon, VA and is a rising senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. She chose to spend her summer volunteering at The Clinic to gain exposure to the medical field, as she wants to work in the medical field in the future. She has been helping out at the nursing station and shadowing the front desk and some of the primary care providers. Outside of The Clinic, she enjoys playing guitar--both electric and acoustic--and playing soccer. Shea appreciates how easy it is to get involved in The Clinic and encourages others to do so as well! Maggie Lavoie
Maggie Lavoie is a rising Junior at the University of Virginia studying Spanish and Global Justice, and--you guessed it!--the daughter of Culmore Clinic Co-Counder Terry O’Hara Lavoie. Maggie is another one of our summer interns, and she has been helping out with our online Public Relations (like writing this blog!), registering new clinic patients, and working at the front desk. Outside of the Clinic, Maggie loves spending time with her family and friends and practicing yoga. Though the Clinic has been a part of Maggie’s life for a while through her mother, she is very thankful for the opportunity to work here for the first time to see how The Clinic truly operates. She loves that the organization is largely woman-powered and is in awe of the community within and surrounding The Clinic. “I feel lucky to have spent my summer around such great people doing such great work,” says Maggie.
